The Icing on the Cake... Your Hair & Makeup!
The big day is finally here. You have spent hours searching for the dress, the jewelry to match and of course the shoes to compliment. So what about your hair and makeup? Without finishing your wedding look with the right hairstyle and flawless makeup, you have missed the “icing on the cake.” These personalized details are just as important as finding the perfect dress. Your completed look achieves that “WOW factor,” when for once, the day revolves around you.
Finding the right hairstyle begins with your own personal taste. Are you fun-loving, traditional, wild, modern or trendy? Look through magazines, surf the Internet, or watch TV to see if you can find a picture of a hairstyle that fits your personality. You want to reflect who you are naturally. Just because it is your wedding you do not need to style your hair any differently than you normally would. If you like a particular style and it makes you feel beautiful and comfortable, plan on recreating this look for your wedding day.
Ideally, you should consult and book your hair appointment approximately six months ahead to secure your day. Then, book your trial about two months ahead of your date. Some hairstylists do not feel comfortable doing updos, so check ahead.
At your appointment, it is best to bring examples of what you are looking for as well as pictures of your headpiece and/or veil. This visually gives your hairstylist an idea of the look you want to achieve. Trendier hairstyles showcase softer, fuller hair. Think low chignons with interwoven loops or a romantic side ponytail. Stylists are also seeing a trend of vintage looks, such as pin curls and waves. Braids are quickly becoming a great addition and can create a unique hairstyle in seconds. Distinctive accessories incorporated in the hairstyle, such as ribbons, fresh flowers or antique brooches, achieve a modern touch. Your hairstylist should ask detailed questions regarding all aspects of your wedding. This way, he or she can have an idea of what fashion will work best with your color scheme and wedding style.
Make sure you have a camera on hand to take photos of your completed look to reference back to on your wedding day. Be sure that your style fits your face shape and dress and is capable of lasting the entire day. If you color your hair, remember to book your color and final hair cut about 2-3 weeks prior to your wedding.
Your makeup should enhance your own beauty and showcase your unique features. Have to-die-for eyes or beautifully shaped lips? Focus on your favorite assets. Consult and book with your makeup artist at least six months before your date. It is highly recommended that you do a trial makeup session at least a month before the wedding. Bring in photos of the look you want to achieve. Make sure to provide your artist with important information regarding the look.
Preparing your skin in advance is a must. Cleansing, exfoliating regularly and moisturizing are the foundation to a beautiful face. Eye lash additions are an easy fix to enhancing your eyes without a lot of makeup. Trends are veering towards smoky eyes and colored gloss for warmer months and deep, rich tones on the lips for a winter wedding. Your makeup should compliment your overall look, including your dress color and flowers you will be carrying.
Upon completion of your makeup trial, be sure to take pictures for later reference. Make sure that your makeup is long-lasting and will not dissolve with tears before you are ready to say “I do.” Booking a professional makeup artist who has experience in weddings, photography shoots and varied lighting is a plus.
