The reception room should be one of your top priorities when beginning to plan your wedding day. This single aspect of your wedding will often set extremely important components like the date, style, guest list and budget. Here are a few major things you should ask the reception facility while you are searching for the right one for your big day.

  1. You should have a rough idea of how many quests you are inviting. Before you spend the time going to visit the room, call and ask what the seating capacity is.
  2. Ask for the room rental price and also ask if you can choose your own caterer. If you must purchase the food from their on-site chef, ask what their prices per person are.
  3. What dates do they have available that correspond to the dates you are considering for your wedding.
  4. Now it is time to visit the room. Look at the style of the space. How much would you have to spend in decorations to have “the look” you want. It is possible that you could spend the same amount decorating a less expensive room than just going with a more expensive room that needs very little added to it.
  5. Next, talk to them about specific things you want/need.
    1. Technology things like a built-in sound system, electric in the ceiling if you plan on hanging lights/chandeliers.
    2. Room for the size of dance floor, DJ set-up, possibly for your ceremony if it rains and you had an outdoor ceremony planned
    3. If they allow candles and other decorative items you are thinking about having.
  6. If it is all good so far, it is time to sit down and discuss extra costs with them
    1. Liquor license, corkage fee, bar service
    2. Other food charges
    3. Early set-up, late tear-down
    4. Linens
    5. Parking charges
  7. Ask who your contact will be up until your wedding day and especially on your wedding day.
  8. Do they recommend any vendors that they work with often? This can save you time when choosing someone for chair covers, flowers, lighting…

You should feel comfortable with your decision. Don’t feel pressured to sign anything the day you first visit the facility. Think about it!
